How Valkyrie Trading interviews

Junior trader candidates report probability, variance and covariance, number sequences and mental arithmetic. A derivatives trader candidate also had a simple coding question (a regular expression).

Answer: 42
Key idea. States: no progress (E₀), just rolled a 5 (E₁).
1. E₁ = 1 + (5/6)E₀.
2. E₀ = 1 + (1/6)E₁ + (5/6)E₀, so E₀ = 6 + E₁.
3. E₀ = 6 + 1 + (5/6)E₀, so E₀ = 42.
Check. Shortcut: 6 + 6² = 42.
